To new beginnings.

I originally started this project as a teaching aide. That has not changed but now I realize the need to empower consumers & businesses through technology. I was born & raised in this town (37 years) and want to give back in a way I know how. I see small businesses struggling to get people in the door. I see the gig economy and side hustles offering way for regular people to supplement their income in the face of stagnant wages and the increased cost of living.

I've talked to owners & managers directly. Yes, Facebook, Instagram, and all the other big platforms are relevant and they do work. The question is--why can't we have a local alternative that connects businesses & regular people? The answer: we can. We can do anything we set our minds to. No matter how hard or insurmountable the obstacles. It sounds so cliche', I admit, but it's true.

Even if this fails I at least I find solace in the fact that I tried. That's life. Wait, no, that's business! Don't worry, though, I think we have done something great here.

A little bit about me: I specialize in Web Services, Mobile App Development, IT Systems, Client-Side Web Development, Data Science, & Machine Learning. I have also managed a small business for a number of years and have a degree in finance & economics. Oh, and I've worked in the retail banking industry.

The platform itself is built from the ground-up on a dedicated Godaddy VPS server. Which means I can integrate just about anything.

Technology

There is a lot going on behind the scenes. This is a 100% custom-built technology (not third-party or white label).

Users receive email notifications both in-app and through their email accounts. This means that when an item has been replied to, the owner will receive a notification. This is a feature that I deemed pivotal for interaction and engagement. As the subscriber email list grows & more businesses get onboard with deals and insights, this will take off (that's the hope, anyway).

The "Threads" social media component uses web scraping technology. You can simply insert a website link and it will automatically crawl it for a picture and a summary of the content. This can include news articles, business websites, etc.

I also plug in to various APIs (application programming interfaces). OpenWeatherMap, Google Maps, StatsCan, Stripe--to name a few. The platform is built from literally thousands of lines of code. It is not 100% perfect (beta release), but the payment integrations are third-party to ensure security. I have laboured to flush out most of the bugs but still a WIP (work-in-progress).

The UI/UX (user interface/user experience) takes cues from Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace, and others. I basically analyzed the trends on both social media and popular marketplaces to arrive on what you see here.

Artificial Intelligence

Machine learning algorithms are now being used for image classification. The model still needs to be fine-tuned, but it is a start.
